It’s International Firefighters Day

its international firefighters day

On May 4th countries all over Europe will be celebrating their firefighters and we can’t think of a better way to spend a day than celebrating the people that protect local communities and demonstrate their bravery each and every day they go to work. May 4th is the feast day of Saint Florian the patron saint of firefighters which is why the day was chosen.

A mark of respect

A minute of silence will be observed at noon in fire stations around the country to honour all those firefighters who are no longer present.

So, how can you show your support of your local firefighters?

You can fundraise for your local firefighters at any time of the year and donate your unwanted clothes by putting them into Fire station charity bins which you can find near your local station. You can also take part in events and challenges throughout the year in running or cycling, social events or perhaps a skydive! Stop, drop, and roll

The most important thing you can do is make their workday easier by preventing fires in your own home and environment by following these simple fire safety rules.

Stop, drop, and roll.

If you are ever in a situation in which your clothing catches fire, cover your face and stop, drop, and roll. This will help put the fire out before it hurts your skin.

Know 2 Ways Out of Every Room. Make a plan and talk about the ways you could get out of each room in your house, and pick a meeting point at a safe place outside where your family will meet.

Go Low – Smoke always rises. If you find yourself in a smoky room, stay close to the ground so you can breathe better and see any obstacles on the floor as you find your way out.

Don’t Touch matches, candles, lighters, or the stove unless you are with an adult.

Get to Know Your Smoke Alarm. Ask your parents to put a working smoke alarm on every floor of your home, and never ‘borrow’ the batteries for your toys. Practice setting it off as a family so you are used to the sound and know what to do if you hear it.
