Toy Story 5 brings Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang back for another adventure. This time, the problem is not another toy. It is technology.

Bonnie gets a frog-shaped tablet called Lilypad. As a result, her old toys suddenly have to compete with a screen for her attention.

Will children enjoy it?

Yes, especially children who already know the Toy Story characters. The film keeps the humour, action and emotional friendships that made the earlier movies work.

However, the toys-versus-tech idea also gives adults something to think about. Many parents will recognise the battle between screens and traditional play.

Is it scary?

The BBFC rates Toy Story 5 PG. It notes very mild slapstick violence and scenes where characters face threats, including chases and falls from heights. These moments have reassuring outcomes.

The BBFC also highlights an upsetting storyline involving a lonely child being mocked and excluded from an online social group. Sensitive children may want to talk about that afterwards.

What about language and rude humour?

The BBFC lists mild bad language and rude humour. There are also jokes about poo and bodily functions.

That content is unlikely to surprise most families who are comfortable with a PG film, but it is useful to know before pressing play.

Does it drag?

The film runs for about 102 minutes. That is manageable for many primary-age children, although younger viewers may appreciate watching at home because they can pause for a break.

Our verdict

Toy Story 5 does not need to reinvent the franchise to work as a family film. Familiar characters carry the story, while the technology theme gives this instalment its own identity.

Now that it is on Disney+, it is an easy family movie-night choice for subscribers.

PARENT TIP

For sensitive younger viewers, be ready to talk about the online exclusion storyline. Watching at home makes the 102-minute runtime easier to manage.

KIDS SAY...

Jessie is still my favourite. It’s funny, but the stuff about screens actually makes you think too.
