Dennis is 75 — but his wardrobe has had an update
Dennis the Menace has spent 75 years causing chaos in Beano, and his red-and-black striped jumper remains one of the most recognisable outfits in British children’s culture.
Now British childrenswear brand Angel & Rocket has turned that visual identity into a limited-edition fashion collection celebrating Dennis’s anniversary and Beano’s Year of Mischief.
What is in the collection?
The six-piece range uses Dennis and Gnasher graphics, comic-inspired prints, slogans and — naturally — plenty of red and black. Rather than simply reproducing Dennis’s famous jumper, Angel & Rocket has worked the Beano look into contemporary childrenswear.
There are also playful details such as sequins, layered effects and bold graphics, giving the collection enough personality to work for children discovering Dennis now rather than existing purely as nostalgia for their parents.
This one is definitely for kids
One reason the collaboration stands out is that children are not an afterthought. This is a childrenswear collection from the start, rather than an adult fashion drop that happens to offer one smaller size.
The collaboration also lands in a useful middle ground between everyday high-street character clothing and expensive designer collaborations. Launch information put prices between £19 and £34.
Parents may recognise more than the kids
That cross-generational element is part of the fun. Parents and grandparents may recognise Dennis immediately, while children get bold comic graphics that do not depend on knowing decades of Beano history.
Character fashion works particularly well when both generations get something different from it. In this case, adults get the nostalgia and children get clothes designed to be loud, mischievous and unmistakably their own.
