Screen-free children's audio player
6 min read
Toniebox 2 takes a very simple idea and keeps it simple. Children put a Tonie character on top of the box and the audio starts.
The second-generation model adds more features without turning the device into another screen. That is still its biggest strength.
Toniebox 2 adds USB-C charging, Bluetooth, a light ring and new bedtime features. It also supports Tonieplay, which adds interactive screen-free games.
The controls remain child-friendly. Children can use the physical ears for volume and interact with the box without navigating menus.
The child’s main experience is screen-free. However, adults still use the app and Wi-Fi for setup and some management features.
Once audio has downloaded, children can listen offline. That makes the box useful in bedrooms, cars and on trips.
The current Toniebox 2 is designed for children from around age one and aims to remain useful into the primary years.
That broader lifespan makes sense because the content can change as the child grows. Younger children may listen to songs and simple stories. Older children can move towards longer audio and Tonieplay games.
The ecosystem can become expensive.
Tonies sells the box separately, while character Tonies, Tonieplay games and some accessories cost extra. Therefore, the best approach is usually to start with a small collection rather than buying everything at once.
Toniebox 2 remains one of the easiest pieces of children’s technology to understand. The physical characters give young children real independence, while Bluetooth and Tonieplay make the second generation more flexible.
For a family buying its first Toniebox, the newer model makes the most sense. Existing original Toniebox owners should look closely at whether they actually need the extra features before upgrading.
Even very young children can choose a physical Tonie and start listening without asking an adult to navigate an app.
Stories, songs and games stay focused on listening rather than putting another display in front of children.
The wider age range and Tonieplay games give the second-generation box more chance of staying useful as children get older.
USB-C, Bluetooth and the light ring make the box easier and more flexible to live with than the original.
