A storybook walk made for autumn

The We’re Going on a Bear Hunt trail runs at Newark Park in Gloucestershire until 15 November 2026. Families follow illustrated installations inspired by the book and animation, and the trail comes with normal property admission.

Families can now do more than read We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. They can walk through it.

The National Trust has opened a family trail at Newark Park in Gloucestershire. It recreates key parts of Michael Rosen’s much-loved story and the award-winning animation.

What happens on the trail?

Visitors move through illustrated installations inspired by swishy swashy grass, thick oozy mud and swirling snowstorms. Eventually, they reach the cave and start looking for the bear.

That gives younger children a clear reason to keep walking. Instead of simply following adults around a historic property, they can follow a story they recognise.

When can families visit?

The trail runs until 15 November 2026. That makes it a good autumn day-out option.

How much does it cost?

The National Trust says the trail comes with normal admission to Newark Park. National Trust members and children under five can enter under the usual free admission rules.

Families should still check current opening times and prices before travelling.

Why does it work for younger children?

The mission is simple: find the bear. The repeated parts of the story also give preschool and early-primary children something familiar to join in with.

Read the story before visiting. Then read it again afterwards. Children can connect the pictures with places they remember walking through.
