If you want to introduce younger children to a Halloween movie without launching them straight into genuinely frightening territory, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom lands at almost exactly the right level.

Aardman’s third Shaun the Sheep cinema adventure begins around Halloween, with an attempt to repair a ruined pumpkin patch leading to a science experiment, strange goings-on and rumours of a beast in the woods.

Is it actually scary?

A little — but deliberately not very. The BBFC highlights very mild threat and scary scenes, including spooky imagery, brief jumpy moments and characters running from a monster. Some characters take on a zombie-like appearance. Crucially for younger viewers, the scarier sequences are short and repeatedly broken up by comedy.

That makes this a particularly useful option for children who want something “scary” for Halloween but are not ready for a proper horror film.

Does it work for adults too?

Very much so. Shaun the Sheep has always been unusually good at making jokes work without relying on dialogue, and Aardman fills the background with visual details and references adults will catch while children follow the physical comedy.

The stop-motion animation is also a pleasure to look at. In an era when so much family animation has a similar digital finish, the handmade feel of Mossy Bottom gives the film a personality of its own.

What should parents know?

Alongside the monster-themed material, there is slapstick violence, burping, toilet humour and comic nudity. Characters briefly carry weapons while trying to chase away a monster. None of it is presented realistically.

The film also contains flashing images, which is important for families affected by photosensitive epilepsy.

Is it worth the cinema trip?

We think so. At around 80 minutes, it is refreshingly short, which makes it particularly suitable for younger children. It is funny enough for adults, accessible for children and visually rich enough to benefit from a big screen.

For an autumn family outing, The Beast of Mossy Bottom is a very strong choice — especially if you want Halloween atmosphere without Halloween nightmares.
